Sheriff Jack Kemler announced the completion of a three-day child support sweep in Mercer County last week. The sweep resulted in 178 arrests in Mercer County. The joint effort, led by the Sheriff s Office included detectives and uniformed officers, in addition to members of the Mercer County Prosecutor s Office, the Mercer Vicinage Probation and Finance Divisions, and the US Marshals Service.

The sweep was part of a twenty-one county operation that took place throughout all New Jersey. It commenced at approximately 5:00 A.M., Tuesday, September 26, 2017 through late evening, Thursday, September 28, 2017.
Fifteen teams of officers, led by the Sheriff s Office pursued the most egregious non-compliant parents or so called “deadbeats” in Mercer County targeting 205 individuals (198 men / 7 women).
“In most every instance, those caught in the sweep deliberately avoided paying their court- ordered child support, said Jack Kemler. “Many of those taken into custody habitually evaded making payments, leaving their children without monies for adequate food or shelter,” Kemler noted.
Of the twenty-one County Sheriff s Offices, Mercer County was the leader in the state for arrests and total monies collected. The sum of arrears monies collected, for distribution by the NJ Family Support Payment Center of Mercer County, was over $57,000. Most of those caught in the sweep claimed they lack the means to make their court-ordered child support payments. However, each was afforded the opportunity to set up lump sum or scheduled payments – as a condition of their release.

Last year, the NJ Child Support Council awarded its Sheriff s Office of the Year Award to
the Mercer County Sheriff s Office – Child Support Enforcement Team, ranking them first among 21 counties in child support arrests, warrants executed, and total monies collected – to aid children.
