Six area law enforcement officers were recently honored with the State Policeman s Benevolent Association s Bronze Medal of Valor: Mercer County Sheriff s Detectives: Joseph Tuccillo, William Perez, and Steven Niederer; Mercer County Prosecutor s Office Detective Anthony Abarno; and New Jersey State Parole Board Officers Timothy Healy and Barry Volkert.
The Valor Award is one of the highest honors the New Jersey State Policeman s Benevolent Association bestows to members of local law enforcement for displaying courage and bravery under difficult or hazardous conditions.
The six officers met gunfire on the morning of May 10, 2017, when they attempted to serve an arrest warrant related to a Megan s Law offense on the 300 block of Centre Street in Trenton. A 36-hour standoff ensued.
“I am proud the officers from each agency were recognized on a state-wide level for their bravery in an extreme situation,” said Sheriff Jack Kemler. “The award validates their courage when under the pressure of gunfire,” Kemler added.
