Store employee Carl Matthews, 65 was working the counter at the time said the suspect who is described as a black male approximately 5’7″ with a medium build and a goatee wearing a gray skullcap, placed a couple items on the counter and started looking at some other items, As Matthews started writing up the sales slip the robber turned the gun on him.

And that’s when things almost got deadly, Matthews who is an avid hunter And experienced in firearms said instincts took over, I just launched for the weapon “I thought he was going to shoot me” The two struggle for the gun almost causing Matthews to be pulled over the counter, the robber fell back towards the door but then he regained his composure and came back up to the counter pointing the gun back at Matthews, at that point He told the thief to “calm down you win. you win. don’t shoot me.” as he turned over the cash from the register. But not before the thief made one more request to lift the register drawer to make sure there were no big bills hidden below. He fled the store and was last seen running towards Broad and Hudson St.

The store employee said as he was waiting for the police to arrive when he Saw several cruisers coming down Broad Street and flagged down an unmarked car to tell him of the robbery, but they said they were on their way to another robbery up the street that turned out to be a second armed robbery just down the road at the Pantry One convenient store (S. Broad St.& Beatty st.) where an employee was pistol whipped in the head.

The two robberies happened just minutes apart and are believed to be connected.
